About Huson
Rural acreage and river privacy at the gateway to Ninemile
Huson is a small, unincorporated community in western Missoula County, set along the Clark Fork River about 20 miles northwest of Missoula between Frenchtown and Alberton. It began as a railway stop and post office in the 1890s and has stayed that way — there's no true town center, no grocery store, and the population is measured in the low hundreds. What exists instead is land: large-acreage homesteads, working ranches, horse properties, and timbered parcels backing directly onto public forest.
The appeal is privacy, space, and access. Huson is the gateway to the Ninemile Valley and the Ninemile Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest — 360,000 acres of trails, creeks, and backcountry beginning at the edge of many properties. Buyers here are trading restaurants and retail for river frontage, quiet roads, dark skies, and the ability to step out the back door onto USFS land, while still being 25-30 minutes from Missoula's airport, hospitals, and university.

Huson FAQ
- Why Huson?
- Because it delivers real acreage, river access, and USFS boundary frontage within a half-hour of Missoula. It's one of the closest places to the city where you can still buy 20, 40, or 100+ acres with meaningful privacy, without being a two-hour drive from an airport or hospital.
- How rural is it really?
- Very. Huson has no downtown, no stoplight, no grocery store, and no school of its own — it's a dispersed community of ranches and homesteads along the Clark Fork River and Ninemile Road. If you need walkable amenities, Huson isn't it. If you want neighbors you can't see, it's a fit.
- Commute to Missoula?
- Roughly 20-30 minutes via I-90 to downtown Missoula, and about 25 minutes to Missoula Montana Airport. Winter driving is manageable — the interstate is plowed and maintained — but secondary roads can be snow-packed.
- What's the school district?
- Most of Huson is in Frenchtown School District (K-12), which is well-regarded in western Montana. Properties on the west end near Alberton fall into the Alberton School District. Buyers should confirm district lines by address before making an offer.
- Is there internet and utilities?
- Power and landline service are generally available along main roads. Spectrum has expanded cable broadband into Huson through Montana's rural buildout, and Starlink, Viasat, and HughesNet cover anywhere without fiber. Most properties rely on private wells and septic systems rather than municipal water/sewer.
- Are there trails or river access?
- Yes — this is the main draw. Huson is the home of the Ninemile Ranger District office (Historic Remount Depot) and sits at the gateway to 360,000 acres of Lolo National Forest, with trails up to Ch-Paa-Qn Peak, Burdette Creek, and the Ninemile backcountry. The Clark Fork River runs right through, offering fly fishing and floating.
